BRIEF - PROHIBITION RUM RUNNING

This new to world brand is named after Al Capone’s boat, Flying Cloud. In the days of prohibition it picked up rum from the Caribbean and brought it back to a thirsty audience in Jacksonville, Florida. Today, this Floridian inspired, Art Deco design pays homage to the rum running culture of the early 1920s and to the Caribbean / US rum blend itself.

It was the 1920s and America had acquired a bit of a thirst. Prohibition and the scarcity of alcohol, led to a rise in the black market almost overnight. This new brand is a story of prohibition and the practice of rum running to the Caribbean in order to quench America’s alcohol needs. Al Capone used his base in Jacksonville, Florida, to send his beautiful wooden boat, the Flying Cloud, on missions to secure quality rum from the Caribbean. This piece of work looks to celebrate the era of Art Deco, whilst also being true at a proposition and concept level. The rum inside Flying Cloud today is a blend of Caribbean rum and a Floridian rum distilled in Jacksonville, USA. The design itself is both decadent and fun, with Miami blues and cherry pinks setting the tone. Beautiful foiled pattern work creates an intricate Art Deco inspired design and on closer inspection, the pattern is a repeat of the whole boat, flanked by elegant tall palm trees. All of these design elements are designed to work against the golden liquid colour itself.

Recently, the actual Flying Cloud boat itself was re-discovered. Now, she can once again enjoy the taste of illicit fun.
